Tom Poiker is interviewed by Nick Chrisman for his 2006 ESRI Press book “Charting the Unknown: How Computer Mapping at Harvard Became GIS.”
Tom Poiker (formerly Peucker) was visiting scholar at the Harvard Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Spatial Analysis in 1968 and from 1973 to 1974 while he was professor of geography at Simon Fraser University. He is now professor emeritus at Simon Fraser University.
Boy, that voice and delivery bring back memories….memories of a impressionable undergrad geography major (1982-83) taken under the wing of Tom during the summer to compile data for the world digital atlas. I remember Tom’s words then: ” If you go into the field of digital mapping I guarantee you will have a job for life”. I retired two years ago after 25 years working in GIS then got bored and walked in the offices of the local government where I live and got hired as the GIS analyst….Tom’s words still ring true…
